"scholarship"
2SkyBlue is a site where people between the age of 13 and 19 years old can win up to $20,000 in scholarship money for creating a Positive Image web site. The site can be 1 - 3 pages and can be created in teams up to 4 people and the site offers weekly and monthly prizes as well. That's so cool and there are so many people in that age group already know how to build a site. Look at all the folks who create their diary pages at Diaryland alone. Pretty neat, huh? I never did get a scholarship for college, nor a grant, nor a student loan. Never did go to college even though I wanted to. My folks told me I couldn't go. I guess we both assumed that the only way I could go would be for them to pay my way. I blew it. Once I knew I couldn't go, I let my grades fall. Skipped school for 30 days and only got caught for 10. I had 20 days of detention to do - 2 for each day I skipped. I didn't learn about the variety of scholarships until it was too late. Then I softened the blow by claiming unequivocally that I did NOT want to go to college anyway. It's easy to see how and why kids drop out. If no one supports you in what you want to do or if there is no help looking to see what's possible and if there's no sharing by the student about what's really important to them, then of course, hopes and dreams fizzle and you get a sense of being trapped or at the very least, left out, which leaves you wondering why you're not good enough. I don't feel like that anymore. I have the sense to see what other ways there are to get what I really want out of life. If I could say one thing to teenagers it is that things are not always impossible. You have it within you to get what you want. Look for the possibilities and don't keep your dreams a secret. The more you ask about what you want, the more you will learn how to get it. Okay, that's my advice for today. |
